Hourglass Modernist Palette in Exposure

Not so much a review this, as basic eyeshadow porn.  Hourglass have recently released their Modernist palettes of five eyeshadow shades pressed into a single pan.  They're beautiful.

Packaging is the basic metallic brown, in a similar size to their multi-powder palettes, but it is inside where the magic happens:

A blend of shimmering champagne, satin dark mauve, metallic taupe, satin blackened purple, and a light shimmering mauve.

I swatched these briefly (finger swatches on bare, unprimed skin), but I haven't worn them properly yet - had to get the pictures for the blog first!

Thoughts are favourable so far, if a bit gritty, but I will post a full review when I've had a chance to see the palette properly in action.

In the meantime, you can get the Modernist palettes from SpaceNK where they cost £52.

One last look:

Spring Blushers with Clinique, Hourglass and Tarte

By Get Lippie

Spring really has sprung now, the days are lighter and longer, and, whilst I've not actually turned off the central heating yet (we have foot-thick walls, and 8ft ceilings, it takes Lippie Mansions a while to warm up), it's definitely getting warmer.  As a result, I've swapped out my darker winter blushes for some lighter, brighter shades for the longer days ahead.

Clockwise from top left we have Clinique's Cheek Pop in Berry Pop, Hourglass Ambient Blush in Luminous Flush, Hourglass Ambient Blush in Radiant Heat and Tarte Amazonian Clay 12 Hour Blush in Fearless.  The top two are on the cooler side, and the bottom two have warmer tones.

Swatched heavily in sunlight, in the same order as above.

The Clinique Berry Pop is hella pigmented - you need the tiniest, tiniest bit of this to get brightly coloured cheeks.  It lasts astonishingly well, too, as do all the colours in the cheek pop range.  Just use a light hand, and an extremely flexible blusher brush when applying.  This is gorgeously pretty packaging too, the gerbera daisy imprint is a delight, and it seems to be lasting well, too.

The Hourglass Ambient Blush in Radiant Flush is a cool pink with beige veining in the pan, and on the skin is much paler than the Berry Pop.  I find it works well if you build up the colour in layers, rather than relying on one thick sweep to last you through the day.  The shades are on the sheer side, but you can build them up.  Ambient Blush in Diffused Heat is a warm coral veined with the yellow Ambient powder in Diffused (which was one of my products of the year in 2013), and is a paler peachy tone when swirled on the skin.  As with Radiant flush, you can build this up to a quite significant shade on the skin.  I've read quite mixed reviews of the Ambient blushes, but I like them a great deal - their rather sheer formula, and built-in highlighter effect make them ideal for the less dextrous amongst us.  Like myself.

Tarte Amazonian Clay blush in Fearless is a more or less straightforward matte coral, with some pinkish undertones.  It's wonderfully flattering on, and lasts quite well.  I'm really happy to see Tarte finally arriving in the UK (even if it is via QVC), and, from what I've seen of the range, I don't think fans will be disappointed.  Having read the ingredients list, however, I'm a little underwhelmed by the formula for this, as it's not that different to practically every other blush on the planet in all honesty, but this is a darn fine blusher, particularly if you want a matte shade.  Currently the shades on offer on QVC are rather limited, but I'm assured that more colours will be available later on in the year.  Personally, I like the foundations more than the blush - which I'm slightly surprised to discover, to be honest - but more about that later.

What changes are you making to your routine for the changes in the weather?

The Fine Print: Mixture of PR Samples and purchases.  Hourglass are going to bankrupt me at this rate.

Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder in Mood

I have literally spent months trying to track this bloody thing down.  Every SpaceNK I visit, I stare forlornly at the hole where Mood (and Diffused) are supposed to be, and then turn, dejected, back out to the street after yet another fruitless shopping trip.  FINALLY I managed to track this one down on Liberty.  I'm still on the lookout for Diffused, btw, so if you find anywhere that has it, please, please, please let me know!

This one, however, is Mood, a light lavender powder designed to brighten most skintones.  I'm prone to (admittedly very pale) sallowness, particularly when extremely tired, and this helps perk me back up.

The Ambient Light powders are milled incredibly finely, and don't contain any opaque pigments so they're rather light and ethereal on the skin.  I find they they do give a "polished" look to the skin, and they have a rather glowy finish, so you need to apply sparingly.

Here you can see it swatched heavily on the right, and blended out on the left of my hand, and you can see the sort of finish you will get. I use this most days, in particular over tinted moisturiser.  I like the brush too (although you have to buy it separately and it's £30), and it's great for diffusing the powder across the skin.

I prefer this to more traditional powders, as it never looks cakey, and doesn't look like you're wearing any makeup at all, which is the greatest thing you can get from your makeup.

Now, if only I could find the yellow Diffused version ....

The Fine Print: Purchases.

Hourglass Cosmetics - Suede and Fresco

I was in Liberty the other day and I got mugged. Mugged at the Hourglass counter. Okay, they didn't really mug me, but I did come away from them £50 lighter in the purse, and slightly dazed-looking.  I've been reading about Hourglass a lot over the last while, and I thought it was time I tried them out for myself.   I picked up their eyeshadow duo in Suede, and their lipstick in Fresco.

I adore their metallic brown packaging:

It's heavy and luxurious, and really innovative, as we'll see.  First off, let's take a look at the eyeshadows:

Yes, they're neutrals. It surprised me too - I'm such a fan of sludge that it's really difficult to move out of that comfort zone sometimes.  So, Suede comprises a cream, and a light cafe au lait shade, perfect for a no-makeup look.  I figured I could use the cream all over the mobile lid and the cafe au lait in the crease for contouring.  I was surprised on swatching at just how pigmented the shades actually were (which is what led to me the purchase, if I'm being honest):

As you can see, the shades go well with my neutral skintone, and they contain a slight - sophisticated - shimmer.  From left to right you can see cream, cafe au lait and then I mixed the cream and the cafe together to see how they would look.  I can see I'm going to get an eyemakeup look that will go well with bolder lipsticks with this duo.  The shadows are creamy and easy to blend.

But another look at the packaging.  At the top of the post you can see the closed compact, but what makes this one different is the pivot in the middle, meaning you can turn the top around:

Or you can close it with the mirror outward to form a handy mirror for your makeup bag:

Now onto the lipstick.  Fresco is a neutral rosy mauve, and it was the first lipstick on the display to really catch my eye:

There's possibly a hint of brown in there too, but it's not too overwhelming.  I love the square tip, which is unusual, but I find it actually aids in application, you can get a really defined lipline without having to use a lipliner.

On me, this is a "My Lips But Better" shade, and one that will work well with smokier eyemakeup looks.

Here's how it looks with Suede:

And here is how it looks on my lips (with flash, and without):

Texture-wise, this is comparable to my beloved Chantecaille Lip Chics, only with a deeper level of opacity.  The Lip Chics are sheer, but I'd say the levels of pigmentation and comfort in wear are on a par. And hey!  The Hourglass is £6 cheaper than the Chantecaille.  Plus, did I mention the lipstick is refillable?  Very handy.
Hourglass cosmetics are available at Liberty or online from Zuneta, the lipsticks are £22, and the eyeshadow duos are £28.

The Fine Print:  Purchases. Spur of the moment purchases.  I wasn't actually mugged.  Unless MrLippie is reading, in which case they were a present from the makeup fairies.
